ONE hundred growers have received a total of $376,000 from an insurance scheme facilitated last year by the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) with support the Pacific Financial Inclusive Programme.

SCGF Acting CEO Vimal Dutt said the insurance scheme has brought relief to farmers and their families and given them a sense of security that never existed before.

“The bundled insurance has rolled into its second year, during the first year a total of 100 cane grower families benefitted,” he said.

“A total sum of $376,000 was paid out in claims of which $36,000.00 paid for fire damage to 12 growers and $340,000 to 88 families for funeral and term life claims.”

Last week, Mr Dutt and Sugar Cane Growers Council CEO Sundresh Chetty paid out death benefits to Ved Prakash Sharma.

“This is a very good incentive for farmers especially for those who are in rural areas and those who have no other means for income, it is a big help,” said Mr Chetty.

Mr Dutt said the bundled insurance scheme rolled out from July last year was provided under Fiji Care Insurance Limited. Cane growers families are now able to receive $3000 should a farmer pass away and $1000 for funeral expenses.

Growers are able to receive $3000 in the event of a fire that destroys their dwelling and $3000 for personal accident under the initiative.
