FORMED under the Nakasi Youth Volleyball Association, Genesis Volleyball Club is looking to use its first major tournament as a foundation for a bigger role in youth volleyball development.

The club brought 22 teams together yesterday for the inaugural Genesis Nakasi Ratu Jone Senibici Volleyball Tournament at the Fiji National Netball Centre, with teams from the Delainavesi, Suva, Raiwai and Nakasi associations taking part.

New club Lomaivuna was among the teams competing as Genesis opened the tournament to players from across the associations.

Genesis president Solomone Besetimoala said youth development remained the club’s main focus.

“The main target is the youth,” Besetimoala said.

“We want to get all the youths around and get them away from what we are facing today, especially drugs.”

Genesis was formed by former Nakasi volleyball representatives and supporters to develop players and rebuild the association’s presence in volleyball.

With $4000 offered to the tournament winners Raiwai Rebels, Genesis hopes to build on its first major event and create a longer-term pathway for young players.
