The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is expected to sit soon, says Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

He said there was no need to wait for 12 months as stated in the coalition agreement that government would re-establish the GCC (Bose Levu Vakaturaga) within that time frame from when the agreement was signed.

The agreement was signed on December 30 last year. He said people should be expecting the GCC to convene soon.

“It’s not going to take 12 months and we don’t need to wait for that long because we have started drafting the provisions to be brought into the House,” Mr Rabuka said.

“We have to find out the assembling of the chiefs, at the moment it’s involving the amendment of the Act to bring back the GCC or the Bose Levu Vakaturaga and put it under an existing Act which is the iTaukei Affairs Act.

He said the chair of the GCC should be independent such as the norm before and initially it was shared by the Minister for iTaukei Affairs.

Meanwhile, Bau chief Ratu Epenisa Cakobau made a courtesy visit yesterday where he declared his support for Mr Rabuka.
