FTA eyes $600k from harvest

Listen to this article:

The Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) will harvest about 6000 yaqona plants from its farm on Vanua Levu that is expected to rake in $600,000 for the union body.

FTA general secretary Netani Druavesi explained to this newspaper that FTA had leased about 52 acres of land in Vanuavou, Saqani in 2017 and started planting yaqona.

“We have now harvested the first 100 plants which is expected to get $10,000.

“The other 5900 yaqona plants are expected to be harvested later in the week and we are happy that we are getting some returns from our investment.

“That is the business arm of FTA which helps us in the long run,” Mr Druavesi said.

The FTA has about 4000 members and the association has other assets such as apartments and real estates that rake in money for FTA and its FTA Welfare Association and FTA Welfare Thrift.
