INFLUENZA-LIKE illnesses (ILI) and acute respiratory infections (ARI) are affecting a large number of people across Fiji, with the Ministry of Health urging the public to take precautions and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

Minister for Health Dr Atonio Lalabalavu said fever and cough were among the common symptoms, with the illness spreading easily among family members.

“Overall, I can say with certainty there’s a flu going around and it’s really affecting a lot of people,” Dr Lalabalavu said.

He urged people with symptoms to drink plenty of fluids, rest and take Paracetamol to manage fever and discomfort.

“Our advice is to drink lots of water, have rest, take your Paracetamol, and if you have a feeling that you’re not improving, then go to the hospital to seek further assistance.

Dr Lalabalavu said the ministry routinely raised public awareness during flu outbreaks, advising people to keep warm, stay hydrated and seek medical attention early.

“Like with any flu outbreak or in the flu season, we usually put awareness out to the general public to keep warm, drink lots of fluid, and seek help and medical attention as early as possible.”

He urged the public to take precautions as the illness continues to spread.
