FIRE held off a second half fightback from Wardens to secure a 16-12 victory in the Commissioner’s Cup challenge that was held at Nasova grounds yesterday.

Fire took a strong 13-5 lead into half-time, putting themselves in a good position to claim the title.

However, Wardens responded early in the second half, scoring to reduce the deficit and put pressure on Fire.

The defending champions continued to challenge their opponents, but Fire held firm to protect their lead and finish the match as winners.

Fire captain Viliame Maiono, who is stationed in Labasa, credited his players for their efforts, saying the team had only one week to prepare for the competition.

“I thank the boys for giving their all on the field, and allowing us to take the victory today,” Maiono said.

Maiono said the players deserved recognition for their commitment and hard work.

Despite the short preparation period, Fire managed to deliver a strong performance and overcome a Warden side that entered the challenge as the defending champions.

The victory marks a change in ownership of the Commissioner’s Cup challenge, with Fire taking the title from Wardens, who won the competition last year.

The competition has been running for eight years, providing teams with an opportunity to compete for the championship. Fire’s 16-12 win adds their name to the list of winners and ends Wardens’ reign as champions.
