LATISHA Smythe says representing Fiji at the 2026 Rugby League World Cup is a blessing as she prepares to wear the Bulikula jersey on the international stage.

Smythe, who has maternal links to Fiji through her mother is part of the Bulikula squad and is eager to contribute to the team’s campaign.

Her mother is from Totoya in Lau, with maternal links to Tailevu.

The former Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs NRLW player described her selection as an unbelievable moment, saying representing Fiji was something she looked forward to.

“It was honestly a blessing. It’s something I look forward to every year,” Smythe said.

“It’s a highlight of the year and representing the country for me is honestly great. I love it.”

With expectations growing around the Bulikula and hopes of an upset against their opponents, Smythe believes the team’s unity and belief will be important.

She said the connection within the group had been strong and the players were excited about the challenge ahead.

“I think the faith that we have is very strong within our group, and the connection that we have is unreal,” she said.

“It’s an exciting time, and I think that we’ll be great.”

Smythe is confident the side can be competitive in its opening match and hopes the team will set a strong platform for the tournament.

She said the Bulikula would aim to play with the determination and spirit associated with Fiji.

“I think that we will set the platform out there, and I think we’ll be strong and competitive and just going to play the Fiji way,” she said.

Smythe is also pleased to be back in Fiji, having previously visited for the 2024 Pacific Championships.

She said returning to the country and experiencing its culture had been a positive experience.

As the Bulikula prepare for the World Cup, Smythe will be hoping to make the most of the opportunity to represent her mother’s homeland.
