FIJIANS of Chinese origin across the country gathered today at the Suva Civic Centre to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The event was attended by Fisheries Minister Semi Koroilavesau and New Zealand High Commissioner Jonathan Curr.

Delivering his speech, Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said Chinese communities around the world were ushering in the Year of the Rat.

“There are many competing versions of the origin story of the Chinese zodiac cycle,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“But throughout the different telling, one this is constant; in the great race arranged by the Jade Emperor, it was not the rat’s size or speed that propelled him ahead of the pack, but rather his shrewdness.

“Owed to his quick-thinking, the Year of the Rat marks the start of the Chinese New Year cycle.”

Mr Bainimarama said there was a refreshing quality about marking the beginning of a new era.

“It first offers a chance for reflection; a chance to celebrate achievement and consider the lessons of history.”

As part of the event, senior citizens from the community received presents from Mr Bainimarama.

The event was organised by the China Cultural Centre in Fiji and the Chinese Association of Fiji.

The Chinese New Year or Spring Festival as it is referred to in mainland China is the most important traditional festival in China and indicates a fresh start.

Aside from being one of the largest festivals in the world, it is one of the several Lunar New Years observed in Asia.
