Fijians from all walks of life have benefited from the Taiwan Technical Mission team since its inception in 1978 in Seaqaqa.
With several projects now established in Fiji, many Fijians have taken advantage of the farming skills passed to them by the experts from Taiwan who have lived in Fiji on a contract basis.
Some of the farmers in Nadarivatu, Sigatoka and Galoa had witnessed and reaped the rewards of farming using Taiwanese techniques.
Taipei Trade Office in Fiji representative Jessica Lee said TTM had made a trade mark in Fiji, especially in the agricultural sector.
“My government and the Taiwanese people, we share the same values of freedom and democracy, and that is we care about people,” she said.
“We want to make sure that the things we do impact Fijian lives and we want Fijian farmers to know that they are also important.
“Covid-19 has had a huge impact on us, however, there is one thing that people need to know –– that is food security.”
Peniasi Keteiwai, a vegetable and guava farmer in Nadarivatu, acknowledged the TTM group for their assistance.
“I have really benefited from them and I thank them for all they’ve done,” he said. Kulukulu, Sigatoka farmer Dharmend Prasad, 72, shared similar sentiments.
“I thank TTM for all the farming methods it has taught, now I have a big vegetable farm where our family income is sourced from,” he said.
