TEAM Fiji under-12 baseball team is on its way to take part in the World Baseball and Softball under-12 World Cup in Chinese Taipei next week.

President Takao Mochida said this was a great platform for the players to get a feel of how to play in an international competition as they would play South Africa in their first match.

“Over the three months, we’ve been training well and we know that we have done our part well and it’s all up to the players to showcase their talent in the two weeks competition,” Mochida said.

“It’s going to be very challenging and we have nothing to lose and what we like the boys to do is play their hearts out and enjoy the game.

“If they can manage what they have learnt for the past months we can make some surprises.”

He added that the selection was based on their performance and their discipline meaning their time of arrival during training and their attitude towards training.

He also thanked the Government for helping them in terms of finances.

“Thankful to Fiji National Sports Commission for giving us a grant but unfortunately we couldn’t secure a sponsor in the corporate businesses.

“Hopefully we can maintain our sportsmanship and we function as a team.

“The team spirit is very high, most of the players are on their first overseas trip and we’re looking forward to a fruitful competition.”

The team departs the country on Wednesday.

They will take on South Africa, Czech Republic, Cuba, Japan and Taiwan.
