THE Fiji Meteorological Services will focus now on more Stakeholder engagement moving forward.

This was highlighted by Misaeli Funaki during an interview with The Fiji Times at the ocean data stakeholder engagement workshop held at the Pacific Community (SPC).

He said this would also enable the Fiji Met to engage more on the type of products these stakeholders would need from them in the near future.

“This is the chance for  us to speak with the stakeholders to allow us to see and to gauge how do they view our products ,” he said.

“Gone are the days of just us forecasters , typing away behind computers and letting the information out now we would like top engage our stakeholders more because the world of meteorology was moving towards impact based forecasting,” he said.

SPC’s Molly Powers-Tora said the World Meteorological Organisation and SPC were working together to develop a forecasting system for FijiMet to improve their forecasts on big waves along the coral coast and the southern part of Kadavu.

Stakeholders attending the workshop included the Fiji Navy, University of the South Pacific, Women in Fisheries, WWF, Mineral and Resource Department to name a few were part of the workshop which ends tomorrow.
