Fiji and the European Union will remain engaged in order to resolve a few outstanding issues related to trade relations, tax governance and visa facilitation, and pave the way for further enhanced dialogue and cooperation.
This was highlighted via a phone call yesterday between the current High Representative/Vice-President of the European Union, Josep Borrell, and Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
According to a statement from the EU, the call took place on the occasion of the 5th EU-Fiji Enhanced Political Dialogue held via videoconference on October 27-28, 2020.
Mr Borrell congratulated Fiji for celebrating her 50 years of independence and confirmed that the EU would pay increased attention to it at a time of growing regional competition.
The duo also discussed the bilateral agenda between the EU and Fiji, a key country for the EU in the Pacific region, as well as the importance of EU-Fiji cooperation to address global challenges of common interest.
They exchanged views on the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the Pacific Island States and the EU, on the global climate change and ocean governance agenda, and on the importance of upholding the international rules-based order.
