FIJI Airports is planning to reclaim land near Nadi International Airport in a bid to meet the country’s long-term aviation needs.

While addressing staff at the bonus payout announcement in Nadi yesterday, executive chairman Faiz Khan said this was part of the company’s five-year plan.

“The master planning exercise that many of you have been involved in shows that over the next five years we have many challenges ahead of us,” he said.

“We need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars in order to prepare this airport for the next 100 years.

“One of our key challenges, if you look at all of the four corners of the airport, someone in the past and in their wisdom gave our land away.

“Whether it be the Nasoso corner or be it here at FNU which used to be our land and we couldn’t protect it and someone gave it away.”

He said their master planning exercise included reclaiming the land over the next five years.

“One of the things that came out of the master planning that we most likely will have to relocate Fiji National University for our long term 100 year plan.

“But what this has done, it now requires us, ironically, to acquire that land at a cost.

“That is our biggest challenge over the next five years.” He said they would overcome the challenge through proper service delivery.

“If the operations are going smoothly and everybody is playing their part then we can achieve a lot of success.”
