The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will rely on the caution interview of Suva lawyer Tanya Waqanika during her upcoming trial, a date for which is yet to be fixed.

Appearing before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad, senior FICAC lawyer Joseph Work submitted that Ms Waqanika made “partial” confessions touching on elements of the offence.

Ms Waqanika is charged with one count of publicly indicating opposition to a political party, contrary to Section 14(7) read with Section 14(1)(d) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013. It is alleged that on April 19, 2024, while serving as a public official on the boards of Investment Fiji and Telecom Fiji Ltd, she posted comments on Facebook indicating opposition to SODELPA.

Defence lawyer Barbara Malimali stated she will not challenge the admissibility of the interview.

Mr Work confirmed that the prosecution has served its trial evidence, including Ms Waqanika’s video-recorded interview and transcripts. Ms Malimali acknowledged receipt of the disclosure documents, noting that despite some apparent gaps, she was satisfied to proceed with the material served.

Ms Waqanika’s bail has been extended, and the matter is adjourned to June 16.
