Digicel customers in Fiji and the Pacific can look forward to a faster and better data speed and coverage across the region.

This after the company together with its new owners Australia’s Telstra announced the upgrading of its data network at the 26th Australia Fiji Business Council and Fiji Australia Business Council Joint Forum at the InterContinental Fiji Golf and Spa Resort in Natadola, Sigatoka, yesterday.

Digicel Pacific CEO Shally Jannif said the first phase of the project was expected to be completed before the end of 2022.

“We have embarked on a upgrade and capacity expansion program of our 4G LTE network that will see improvement in data speed and coverage,” she said.

“In addition to this we have started our own fiber network in Suva.

“This is the first time that Digicel is investing in rolling out its own fibre infrastructure.

“The first phase should be completed by early December.

“Now this development is not just a first for Digicel but will also see the first horizontal directional drilling machine in action in Fiji.

“This will reduce the deployment time of traditional trenching methods from 12 months down to three months.”

She said they were very excited to be on this new journey.

“As a Fijian, I am proud of what Digicel has brought to the Fijian economy.

“We have a passion for innovation and enthusiasm for being competitive e and shaking up the status quo.”

She added that they were looking forward to also work with its new owners to bring forth digitalization of telecommunications to Fiji and the region.
