The grieving brother of a man who died while trying to stop a fight over the weekend said they had no idea that was the last time they would see him alive when he left home on Saturday evening.

Eparama Saunokonoko, is the brother of 38-year-old Ovasisi Salusalu who was assaulted and died while trying to stop a fight between a couple in the early hours of Sunday at Sakoca Settlement in Tamavua.

“So, he left Saturday evening for his night shift and was supposed to come home the next day,” Mr Saunokonoko said.

“We had no idea that when he was leaving home, that would be the last time we would see him alive.”

Mr Saunokonoko said he was informed of his brother’s death soon after the incident.

“I was told of his passing when they were bringing his body down from Tamavua.

“We still can’t believe he is gone.”

Meanwhile, police are calling on Fijians to be wary of consuming excessive amounts of alcohol.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu said the 38-year-old tried to prevent a domestic dispute but was assaulted.

He said this was the second alcohol infused incident recorded over the weekend.

Mr Driu said the cases were a sad reminder that the excessive consumption of alcohol has serious consequences, with members of the public reminded to drink responsibly and in moderation.
