Having started an early career as a journalist with Communications Fiji Ltd, Amelia Simmons saw how life could be so challenging for many women.

After migrating to the United States of America and continued working, she returned home to start a new business and support women.

Ms Simmons, who continues to visit her family in the US, said it was important for people to help each other — part of the purpose of her return.

Since starting the new U.G Boutique in Labasa which has a hair salon and sells a variety of bags and other products, she has assisted women in Labasa and Savusavu.

“These women have been making their products for the past years but used to sell around town and had no definite market to sell to when they’re in town,” Ms Simmons said.

“So after opening the boutique, these women used to come and ask if we wanted to buy and we did and we have been doing that ever since we opened last year.

“The reason I’m doing this is because I understand the challenges and struggles many women face especially in rural areas when trying to make a living.”

For the women in Savusavu, U.G Boutique buys pearl bracelets, saving these women a whole day of walking around Labasa Town.

“These women know where to go when they come to Labasa and we are always prepared to buy their products because for me, it’s about helping them earn an income,” Ms Simmons said.

“Through our help, their families are assisted and we’re glad to assist.”
