STUDENTS who abuse the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme will be taken to task, says Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board CEO Bobby Maharaj.

He said they had identified areas where students were suspected of abusing scholarships.

“There is no substitute for honesty,” Mr Maharaj said.

“The schemes are for them and they must use it and not in any way find a way of abusing this scheme because if that is the case, we will take appropriate action and we will refer them to the relevant authorities.”

Mr Maharaj said the board now had an ICT system where things were managed.

“We do manage a couple of things as far as the rental agreement is concerned.

“We now require them to submit that annually.

“It’s no longer three to four years so that we know exactly where they are renting and what their rent amount is.

“For potential bus fare abuses, we now have that under control because we are now obtaining receipts from our service providers.

“And if there is any suspicious transaction we sit with the students and identify what is happening.”

He said unlike before, the board no longer obtained results from students, rather it dealt directly with institutions or the Education Ministry.
