SINCE the inception of free early childhood education, enrolment rates have increased from 1000 pre-school enrolments to over 19,000.

Minister for Education Rosy Akbar said the ministry had seen continuous increase of 1 per cent annually in primary and secondary school enrolment.

“From 2014, we had a year on year average increase in enrolment of girls at a rate of 3 per cent each year.

That’s a staggering increase of 16 per cent over the past six years,” she said.

“I can only talk about Fiji, but as a ministry we have also committed to achieving the outcomes identified in the Pacific Regional Education Framework and our priorities outlined in our National Development Plan.

While officiating at the council of Pacific Education’s triennial conference in Nadi last week, Ms Akbar said there was a need for Pacific Island countries to follow the same path ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

She reiterated that the Fijian Government saw education as an investment in the future and the nation as a whole.
