Around this time in 2024, we wrote about how wonderful it was to see the Hibiscus Festival back after such a long hiatus! It had not been held for five years by then.
Then it happened! And again, this year, we say, surely there can be no doubts about the impact of the event, and its place in the minds of Fijians around the world. There is excitement in the air. There is a lot of anticipation and expectation.
Let’s face it. Generations of Fijians grew up with the annual event. There is a rich history connected to this festival! And who can doubt the fact that it has left an indelible impression on many minds and captured the imagination of thousands.
It was an event where all imaginary demarcation lines were thrown out the window, so to speak, and the venue turned into a cauldron brimming with people of different races and religions. It was a celebration of community and togetherness.
And the people of Suva converged on the venue, embracing the festivities, the fun and the magical atmosphere. People also came from around the country, making a beeline for the Capital City. They wanted to be part of the event.
The festival was like glue that brought people together in a fun-filled environment. There were many things to do and see, and for children, there were fun rides, games, food and drinks.
As we head into this year’s event starting today, there will be high expectations about how it is going to turn out.
For the contestants, this is a challenging time in their young lives. They will share moments of pride, joy and mixed emotions. They will be exposed to many challenges, offering them opportunities to gain self-confidence and pursue their dreams.
It is never easy to step up and face thousands of people, knowing you are the focus of attention. But there are confident young contestants who have accepted this challenge to front this year’s event.
They need our support to make an impact on the lives of other Fijians. We can be motivated by messages of hope, embracing change and making a difference in our personal lives. Such events have the potential to inspire us and give us hope in the face of massive challenges.
The festival has grown as a catalyst for change, connecting the people of Suva and the broader Fijian community and we look forward with great expectation to the joy and inspiration it can bring.
This iconic event is a testament to the enduring significance and cherished place it holds in the hearts and minds of Fijians around the world! It belongs to the people, and there is cause for celebration!
So, as we head down to the venue of the festivities, let’s celebrate our unity in diversity, while remaining vigilant and mindful of our surroundings.
We face serious challenges, from HIV, drug addiction, to home invasions and theft, but together we can promote safety, security and care for one another. Let’s support each other, look out for our families and neighbours, and show that Fiji is strongest when we stand together. Let’s make this Hibiscus Festival a safe, pleasant and truly enjoyable celebration for everyone!
