Weightlifting Fiji gets an early test this weekend as a curtain-raiser to the coming Pacific Mini Games, Commonwealth Games and the 2024 Olympic Games.
Ten junior and youth Fijian weightlifters compete against regional neighbours including Australia and New Zealand tomorrow and Sunday in the inaugural Oceania Weightlifting Online Youth and Junior Championship.
“This is a good test for our lifters heading into the Mini Pacific Games, the Commonwealth Games and the 2024 Olympic Games.” WF Fiji coach Henry Elder Jr said.
“We have a strong team of upcoming boys and girls. The Oceania championship had been held before, but this is the first online competition for only junior and youth weightlifters.”
Fiji competes against Aust, NZ, Papua New Guinea, Guam, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga, New Caledonia, Tahiti, Tuvalu and Vanuatu The team has been training for months at the Fiji Sports Council’s National Fitness Centre at Laucala Bay, Suva.
The tournament starts with the women’s weigh-in at 6.30am tomorrow.
