GET an early detection for symptoms of meningococcal diseases.
That is the warning from the Fiji College of General Practitioners president, Dr John Fatiaki.
Dr Fatiaki made the comment in light of the recent death of a 21-year-old nursing student in Labasa.
“It is extremely important that if you develop a fever or headache or vomiting or any signs of meningococcal diseases, you do not wait, you go and see your doctor immediately,” he said.
Symptoms usually come on quickly, and may include:
• Fever and chills.
• Mental status changes.
• Nausea and vomiting.
• Purple, bruise-like areas (purpura)
• Rash, pinpoint red spots (petechiae)
• Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
• Severe headache.
• Stiff neck.
