MARIST Brothers High School long-distance race winner Waisiki Dawai hopes this year’s Coca-Cola Games will be different from last year’s 1500 metres.
The Naqia, Wainibuka, Tailevu lad said he wanted to end his last year in school on a memorable note after winning the 1500m senior boys yesterday in the Suva Zone Two, clocking 4:59:01 minutes.
He said his mother was his best supporter.
“I can prove to her that besides school, I can still achieve other things besides the main primary goal which is education. I want to ensure that before Mother’s Day.
“It is something for her to cheer on during the Coca-Cola Games.
“I chose the track because we always ask our athletes what is the toughest competition and they say that it’s the long distance. They are the ones who have guts, they run the length and I tried it out to show them that nothing is impossible,” Dawai said.
He is 18.
“One of the reasons I wanted to participate was because we’ve seen some of our athletes who have gone to other schools and scholarships. We wanted to represent the school and take the challenge so we also want to put the schools name up there.
“The support of the brothers were amazing as they cheer for you and pushing you into the limit and go further and also our athletes helping each other so that is one major contribution to our training,” he said.
Co-athlete Albert Nasau, whocame in second clocking the time of 5:07:13 said since this is his last year he wanted to dedicate it back to the school.
In the 1500m intermediate boys MBHS took the top position Meli Raiova clocked 4:45:35 and Christopher Zoing clocked 4:55:01.
