INCOMING Flying Fijians head coach Vern Cotter is looking forward to his new role and work with the Fiji Rugby Union to develop and strengthen the Fijian talent and their natural contribution to the game.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to coach the Flying Fijians and to be involved in the development of rugby in Fiji” said Cotter.

“I have been really impressed with the people I have dealt with up until now, and we all know the talent within Fiji and the good work that has been done until now.”

Having coached a number of Fijian players during his time in France including Nemani Nadolo, Nemani Nagusa, Napolioni Nalaga and former All Blacks Sitiveni Sivivatu, Cotter is looking forward to starting his new role and working with everyone at FRU to continue to develop and strengthen national rugby programs and talents.

“Fiji rugby has come a long way in the last few years and I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with the talent within the national teams and enhance the competitiveness of Fiji on the world stage.”

Currently based at the French club Montpellier, Cotter expressed enthusiasm for the challenge ahead and is appreciative and thankful to the FRU board for giving him the opportunity.

Wielding a host of experience, Cotter began coaching 20 years ago with Bay of Plenty in the National Provincial Cup before being approached by the Canterbury Crusaders in 2005.

In 2006 he joined Clermont Rugby in France before being appointed head coach of Scotland rugby team leading them to the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

He is currently the director of rugby at Montpelier Rugby Club.

Cotter will join the Flying Fijians ahead of the 2020 Pacific Nations Cup.

His understudy will be Senirusi Seruvakula.
