ONLY two students are registered surveyors out of the 50 students that graduated from the Fiji National University (FNU) with a Diploma in Surveying since 2009, says Lands and Mineral Resources Ministry permanent secretary Malakai Finau.

Mr Finau said this showed a poor reflection of the surveying profession in Fiji.

“Since the inception of the surveying course in 2009 at the FNU, about 50 students graduated with a Diploma in Surveying, but only two are registered as surveyors,” he said after officially opening the Fiji Institute of Surveyors 58th Survey Congress 2018 at the Uprising Resort in Pacific Harbour last week.

“This is a poor reflection of the surveying profession in Fiji, hence, I encourage this forum to discuss the best way forward in addressing this issue faced by the profession as there is a lot of demand in surveying services.”

He also encouraged the Fiji Institute of Surveyors to register more surveyors in the country.

“I also encourage the Fiji Institute of Surveyors to collaborate with the Surveyors Registration Board and government to register more surveyors to fill up the vacuum left by experienced surveyors who have passed on or migrated overseas,” he said.
