BAU chiefs Ratu George Cakobau and Ratu Epenisa Cakobau will be given an opportunity to provide information and evidence as to why they should be installed as the paramount chief of the Kubuna confederacy.

Ministry of iTaukei Affairs permanent secretary Naipote Katonitabua said this was part of an enquiry to determine the Vunivalu of Bau.

Mr Katonitabua said the chairman of the Native Lands and Fisheries Commission (NLC) had confirmed the process with the two chiefs.

He said the chairman was now working to set up an enquiry team.

“The chairman is now working on appointing its commissioners because in an enquiry like this they will need three or four commissioners and these are officers within NLC,” Mr Katonitabua said.

“It is a normal enquiry and this is in regards to disputes.

“These are processes where they will be given the opportunity to provide information and evidence on who should be in that perspective; need be the Vunivalu.

“They are going to share information on why they think they have to be the Vunivalu.”

Mr Katonitabua said the time frame as to when the enquiry would begin and conclude was not clear at this stage.

The planned installation of Ratu Epenisa Cakobau as the Vunivalu of Bau was scheduled to take place on June 8, but was stopped by the NLC after an unresolved internal conflict between members of the chiefly Tui Kaba clan consisting of Mataiwelagi, Naisogolaca, Muaidule and Naqaranikula.

Ratu Epenisa and others were also taken in for questioning by police officers on the same day after allegations they had planned to continue with the installation despite the directive from the NLC.
