THERE is a need to improve the transport sector like road infrastructures across Fiji as various sectors of the economy continues to grow.

Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate highlighted this while speaking at the Roads Haulage Association annual general meeting (AGM) at Novotel Hotel in Lami yesterday.

He said transportation was important in any economy.

“Transportation is critical for the growth and development of any country. In Fiji, we are very reliant on transportation by road so the work of your members has been critical for our developments,” he said.

“In Fiji we have been enjoying consecutive years of growth for nine years and we will see 10 years of consecutive growth. We have seen growth in a number of sectors of economy for which transportation by road is critical.”

Mr Usamate reminded the association to assist in their role of maintaining the growth of the transportation sector in Fiji.

He said Government over the past had invested millions of dollars in improving road assets.

“Consequently Government has over the past few years invested huge amounts of money into fixing and improving our road transport system and network,” Mr Usamate said.

In his capacity as minister, he said, he would ensure the road transportation system including road haulage remained well functioning and effective.

“Second is to ensure that we preserve and maintain our road infrastructure, and to minimise expenditure on unnecessary road repairs and maintenance,” he said.
