To curb the issue of stray dogs, there needs to be a countrywide education, awareness and de-sexing campaign, says Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) clinic and shelter manager Shaneel Narayan.

He said along with the Ministry of Agriculture, local councils and SPCA had been conducting outreach programs in various communities across the country.

“What we do is we go out to different locations to do outreach clinics and educational awareness,” he said.

He added SPCA conducted research during the pandemic to account for the stray dogs in the Suva area.

“The research was called population dog management and from the data we got we realised that it is not only stray dogs but owned roaming dogs.”

According to Mr Narayan, SPCA had two methods in dealing with stray dogs brought to the shelter.

“The different council or Ministry of Agriculture traps and people have their own traps, so that is the different ways we get stray animals.

“We do thorough medical checks, vaccination and then put them up for adoption and try to re-home them.

“We also have the ‘TNR’ trap, neuter and release where we de-sex and release it back to the neighbourhood.

He said the animals were only released back to the community provided they can be fed.

He stated that some dog owners did not confine their dogs, therefore, the dogs mixed around with the stray dogs and formed packs, which eventually caused issues to the public.

He urged Fijians with dogs and pets to keep them confined within their property.
