GRASSROOTS sports development in Fiji is receiving a boost through the growing Catch & Pass program.

The program is an initiative aimed at strengthening one of the most important fundamentals in sport among young athletes across the country.

Led by Kaiviti Silktails head coach Timoci Duve, the program has been travelling through rural and urban communities teaching primary school students the importance of proper catching and passing techniques.

Duve said the initiative focuses heavily on children aged between 10 and 12, with the belief that introducing correct skills early could significantly improve player development in the future.

“We know once they are able to grasp the idea, and more importantly for the coaches to deliver Catch & Pass skills training, it will enhance the development of players growing up.”

Duve said the initiative was not only about rugby league, but about building fundamentals that could benefit athletes in several sports including rugby union and netball.

“It’s a fundamental that is very much used in almost all sports in Fiji.”

Beyond player development, the initiative also aims to educate coaches so they can continue proper techniques within their schools and communities.

While the program is still focused on grassroots development rather than elite pathways, Duve believes teaching strong fundamentals could eventually create opportunities for talented youngsters to attract the attention of scouts in the future.

As the Catch & Pass program continues to grow, organisers remain committed to building a stronger foundation for Fiji’s next generation of athletes by identifying young talent and strengthening the fundamental skills needed to success in sport.
