THE boiler upgrade at the Rarawai mill is expected to be completed by June, says Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) chief operating officer Navin Chandra.

Rarawai mill’s poor performance was raised again during a consultation on the National Sugar Industry Policy in Ba this week.

“Obviously, this was not the sentiment last year,” Mr Chandra said.

“In 2017, Rarawai mill was hailed as one of the best mills. There is no hiding from FSC’s point of view that the Ba mill performed badly last year.

“We accept it and all we can do is apologise to all those who have been affected, but apologising is not good enough unless you put the money where it makes a difference.”

He said they were investing $9.3 million into upgrading the boiler, money which had been approved for use already.

“An Indian consultant is working on the design, we will have the boiler refurbished and we will have the mill perform better.”
