NADI has the potential to become a hub for medical tourism in the country.
Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Dr Ram Raju said this was a concept that had been discussed for a number of years.
“In fact when the Heart International first started, we could see that this could become a leading centre for medical tourism,” he said.
“This is where patients from neighbouring countries, especially Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Island countries, suffering from heart attacks can fly in to the country and get treated here within a few days with the coronary angiogram and stents
“They can have a well-deserved holiday in one of the best settings so this is where we should be targeting, to promote Fiji as a centre of medical tourism starting off with conditions to do with heart diseases.”
He said the concept of medical tourism wasn’t fairly new, as there had been instances where people had come from regional countries to seek medical care at the then Suva Private Hospital (now MIOT Pacific Hospitals) when it was initially established.
Dr Raju said established facilities also gave visitors added comfort when they visited the country.
