A young man who took his partner for a car ride early yesterday morning while waiting for his mother’s birthday cake to bake, never made it back home. Marika Damuni, 25, of Malawai, Nadi was hit by a truck as he crossed the road near Naisoso, Nadi to relieve himself.
His family was preparing to celebrate his mother, Wainikiti Damuni’s, 53rd birthday.
Marika was hit by an oncoming truck at the Nasoso junction at 2am.
“We were baking a cake for today’s celebrations and while waiting he offered to take us on a ride around Nadi,” his partner Alumita Marama said.
“We stopped near the Nasoso traffic lights because he wanted to relieve himself.
“I didn’t know that he had crossed the road.
“I heard the truck hit something and I called out to him to see that someone was hit.
“I saw someone was lying near the truck but didn’t know it was him.”
She said her world came crashing down when she saw Marika’s lifeless body near the truck.
According to police, the truck was driven by a 31-year-old man. Police investigations continue.
