SOON-to-be elected members of Parliament should be ready to handle robust and heated debates on national issues in the next four years of Parliament proceedings, says Speaker of Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni.

Dr Luveni’s advice comes after the swearing in of FijiFirst party leader Voreqe Bainimarama as Prime Minister for his second term at the State House in Suva yesterday.

“We are fortunate that for the last four years, Parliament sittings were aired live on television, so they should know what to expect when they come into Parliament. “They should prepare themselves for robust and heated debates. There have been critical debates where MPs sort of go at each other, they should be ready for all this,” Dr Luveni said.

She advised the soon-to-be MPs to always think twice and carefully when speaking in Parliament that it doesn’t discredit them.

“The MPs should carry themselves with dignity in Parliament even at times when they are forced to go against their opponents and that they use the platform to fight for issues on behalf of those that put them in Parliament,” Dr Luveni said.

Now that the PM has been sworn in, she said the focus was now on the swearing in of Cabinet ministers and MPs.
