FOLLOWING in the footsteps of his elder brothers, Kavekini Tabu is a name to look out for in the national 7s scene.
Kavekini is the younger brother of Sevuloni Mocenacagi and Isoa Tabu.
The Nukuilau, Navosa trio are part of the Fiji 7s team extended training squad preparing for the 2019 Oceania Sevens Championship.
Coach Gareth Baber said the Tabu brothers proved themselves in local rugby competitions and were eligible for selection into the national squad.
“I’ve known Sevu for a while and Isoa playing in the Yamacia club and again Kave who plays for the Yamacia as well and again they’re robust individuals, no nonsense when they come on the field and they got great work ethics as well,” said Baber.
“I hope they don’t see themselves only as a group of brothers but they are actually part of a team who have the ability to make the final cut to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.”
Familiar names who are also part of the extended squad are Kalione Nasoko, Jerry Tuwai, Paula Dranisinukula, Meli Derenalagi, Filimoni Botitu and Alosio Naduva.
“Everyone is back and looking good, obviously we have gone through some tough stuff over the past couple of weeks as we increase the amount of running that they do and added some intensity in to their sessions.
“But that all comes off the base of the work that they have done over the off season and as we get towards the tournament we would do more game proper,” said Baber.
Baber said he would be able to name the squad by next week.
“I will be able to name it by the middle of next week, obviously the week following is the Oceania Sevens tournament but to give everybody the opportunity to keep pushing their case for selection.
“I have in my head a vision of what the squad could look like but what we do is keep the pressure on them in training all the time to increase their performance level in training which is hugely important,” said Baber.
The Fiji national sevens team are defending champions of the Oceania 7s.
