THE Fiji 7s team players will be given a chance to participate in regional and local tournaments to keep them in shape for the final legs of the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series in Singapore and Hong Kong.
The two tournaments have been shifted to October following the outbreak of the COVID-19 disease. Fiji 7s head coach Gareth Baber said there was a possibility of holding a camp in Japan before the Tokyo Olympics.
“We have lost two of the bigger tournaments to nearly the end of the year,” Baber said.
“Hong Kong 7s is the biggest tournament in this period which has always been the main focus.
“But now we are looking at plans of playing teams in the Oceania region maybe in Australia or here in Fiji.
“We are potentially looking at going to Japan as well to hold a camp there so we can acclimatise to life there.
“Some players haven’t been to Japan so they will get an opportunity to do that. We only found out last week that the Hong Kong and Singapore 7s tournaments have been moved and here we are fresh off to the Los Angeles and Vancouver tournaments.”
The Olympics is scheduled to be held from July 24 to August 9. The Singapore 7s has been rescheduled to October 10-11 followed by the Hong Kong 7s from October 16-18.
Baber said apart from participating in regional and local tournaments, the players part of the training squad will hold occasional camps.
“We just need to keep the competition going within players for the positions,” he said.
“You get a lot there by putting body on body in an on field environment. The focus is building up towards the Olympics.
“After that the players will get back to prepare mentally and focus on their fitness levels which will be very important before we head to Singapore and Hong Kong.
