The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has called on Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to offer an apology to one of the University of the South Pacific’s renowned and award-winning academic Dr Rajni Chand.

In a statement today, FWCC Co-ordinator Shamima Ali said they were appalled at Mr Bainimarama’s uncalled-for and “misogynistic attack” on Dr Chand.

“To preserve the respect, authority and wisdom of the office of the PM, as well as safeguard and genuinely promote human rights and empowerment of women, Mr Bainimarama should fully retract his statement and offer an apology to Dr Chand and the women of Fiji,” Ms Ali said.

She said the PM’s disparaging comments in the media show he does not believe in the empowerment and human rights of women and promotes misogyny.

More reports in tomorrow’s edition of The Fiji Times.
