WHAT some critics describe as “freebies” in education is a gift to the underprivileged and the less fortunate, says Education Minister Rosy Akbar.

She made this comment while responding to the President’s address delivered during the opening of Parliament.

Ms Akbar said there were 195 countries in the world out of which only 24 provided free or close to free education.

“I share these statistics because some critics are quick to compare our achievements with those of our neighbouring countries, let me assure you none of which are on the free education list,” she said.

While speaking on how students have become more comfortable and acquainted with new technology, Ms Akbar said students needed to be taught on how to operate responsibly in online spaces.

“Not only we are bringing technology into our classrooms, we’re using it to improve efficiency and decision making within my ministry,” she said.

Ms Akbar also said the ministry continued to work with the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission to embed more effectively a framework for promoting human rights within the curriculum.

Ms Akbar yesterday appealed to members of Parliament to not politicise the education of young Fijians.
