THE possibility of Mark Nawaqanitawase switching allegiance from Australia to Fiji has emerged after his agent revealed the code-hopping star was considering representing the Flying Fijians.
The revelation, reported by News Corp at 5.10pm today (Tuesday, October 13, 2026), has placed the Wallabies on alert ahead of next year’s Rugby World Cup in Australia.
Nawaqanitawase’s agent, Milan Volavola-Shankar, whose brother is former Fiji playmaker Ben Volavola, has raised the prospect of the 26-year-old winger choosing Fiji over Australia.
The former Wallabies international scored six tries in 11 Test appearances between 2022 and 2023 before making a successful move to rugby league with the Sydney Roosters, where he became a crowd favourite and premiership winner.
He is now returning to rugby union under a two-year contract with Japan’s Saitama Wild Knights, reportedly worth about $3 million.
Despite his Australian sporting success, it was reported Nawaqanitawase remains proud of his Fijian heritage through his biological father, Sevuloni Nawaqanitawase, and his late stepfather, Aisake Tovehi.
Wallabies coach Les Kiss is expected to contact the winger to discuss his international future after allowing him time to celebrate his NRL success.
Kiss said he would speak with Nawaqanitawase before determining whether he would feature in Australia’s plans.
Fiji’s interest comes as the Flying Fijians prepare for next year’s global tournament under new coach Jake White.
