A police officer charged with murder was granted a $500 non-cash bail by the High Court in Suva last Tuesday.

Fifita Tawake Toma denied the charge before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.

The court heard that on January 13, Mr Toma allegedly assaulted an intoxicated Peter Lanyon who subsequently died from his injuries.

Bail was granted with two sureties — his father who is in the navy, and his father-in-law, a retired soldier.

The case has been adjourned to April 26.
