Fiji will join maritime communities from around the world in celebrating World Maritime Day this Friday, September 25, 2026.
According to the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, with the theme, “From policy to practice: powering maritime excellence”, the celebration will be held at Ratu Sukuna Park from 8am to 2pm.
For the first time, the theme will run for two years, highlighting IMO’s clear commitment to put policies into practice, by providing technical assistance, training and other essential services.
International Maritime Organization’s secretary general, Arsenio Dominguez, said this year too many seafarers lost their lives to geopolitical conflicts.
“Our thoughts are first and foremost with the seafarers and their families who have been affected,” Mr Dominguez said.
“The global supply chains for energy and food have been disrupted. At IMO, we will always provide strong, steadfast support for shipping and seafarers.”
This year’s celebration theme recognizes the reality that regulations will only deliver safer, more resilient, and cleaner shipping when they are implemented worldwide.
Also, it acknowledges the fact that implementation must make a difference where it matters most for the people working at sea.
“This theme drives our mission to ensure that every member State is supported to effectively implement IMO regulations,” Mr Dominguez said.
“Our vision is to ensure that all IMO Member States can benefit from the opportunities that the next decade will bring from embracing digitalization to responding to the energy transition to creating more opportunities for women, so that we can build a more inclusive and diverse maritime sector.
“But across all these policies and priorities, one principle must remain constant: Seafarers come first.”
