HAVING seasoned players such as Levani Botia and Peceli Yato is an added boost for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians for the Nations Championship in July, says former Flying Fijian fullback, Kini Murimurivalu.
Murimurivalu, who also played on the wing, made his international debut in 2011 and made 43 appearances, scoring 39 points. He complimented Botia and Yato for always putting their hand up to represent the nation in donning the coveted white jersey especially with Fiji making its appearance in the inaugural global rugby competition, which will be staged every two years.
“I think it’s a good squad, a good team, a good mix. It’s good to see Yato back in the team, and Botia,” Murimurivalu told Times Sport recently.
“‘Bots’ (Botia) always puts his hand up for Fiji and it’s good, it’s good for the team especially for the young players coming up with experience.
“And the young players can learn from both of them, and I know that it’s going to be a good competition this year.”
Botia and Yato are part of the 50-member extended squad selected by acting head coach Senirusi Seruvakula for the July segment of the Nations Championships in Wales, England and Scotland.
Yato returns with an opportunity to represent Fiji this year after stepping away from the nation’s squad for the Rugby World Cup in 2023.
Experience coupled with skill and seasoned precision are what Botia and Yato will bring alongside senior players joining from Europe such as Seta Tamanivalu, Josua Tuisova, Filimoni Botitu, Jiuta Wainiqolo, Albert Tuisue, Sam Matavesi and Lekima Tagitagivalu among others.
Seruvakula’s selection in the 50-member squad includes these players and younger ones from the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua and players plying their trade in Europe and Japan to add depth and create a tough mix of players the acting head coach will make a final selection of when the July fixtures draw near.
