FIJI National University (FNU) students will now enjoy free, unlimited access to the internet 24/7 under Government’s DigitalFiji program.
This is after Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum launched free WiFi hotspots yesterday at Derrick and Nasinu Campuses before proceeding with the 2018-2019 post National Budget Information Session.
The initiative to provide free WiFi for students of Fiji National University at its campuses and other public WiFi hotspots for an hour a day was announced in thee 2018-2019 National Budget.
It is understood that four key campuses are being targeted to come online in the first stage.
These campuses are Nasinu, Derrick (Samabula), Nadi and Natabua (Lautoka).
Under the ‘DigitalFiji’ initiative, which recently launched the free-to-air digital boxes and the Walesi mobile app (which allows digital TV to be viewed on a smart phone), Government has funded Walesi to work with FNU to install high-speed wifi across 24 FNU campuses and centres throughout Fiji.
FNU Derrick Campus, Samabula students were the first to log-on to the wifi hotspots soon after the announcement.
Solicitor-General Sharvada Nand Sharma, who is the chair of Walesi, was on-hand with his board members and Walesi team to guide students through the log in process

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Walesi received $19m funding for digital revolution.
“The idea is to create these zones, particularly where young people can come together, share information and also be able to communicate with each other and be able to use the technology itself,” he said.
FNU vice chancellor Professor Nigel Healey acknowledged the Fijian Government for making FNU a full player in the digital academic community.
Professor Healey said this digital capability will give the students the opportunity to access study portals wherever they are on campus (within the geofenced range) and access information from the internet.
