World Rugby coaches master trainer Richard Kelly is in Fiji conducting level three coaching assessments for some local coaches.

Travelling from New Zealand, Kelly was invited by Oceania Rugby to conduct the assessment and is being hosted by the Fiji Rugby Union.

“I’ve been doing this work for a very long time, and I’ve always looked forward to coming here to Fiji,” he said.

Kelly conducted an assessment on Wednesday at the University of the South Pacific grounds in Suva.

“These coaches have completed and studied levels 2 and 3, and now I have to assess them while they coach players on the field.”

In conducting his assessment, Kelly said looks at how a coach discovers an issue and finds ways in which they can fix them.

“It’s all about problem-solving and being able to get your point across to your players.”

Kelly thanked the FRU for providing him with an assistant who helped translate for him while assessing them.

“I don’t want to disrupt his method of connecting with his players. Luckily, I have a guy from FRU who has been translating for me.”

Kelly will make another visit in July to assess other coaches.
