Latter Day Saints is looking to sprinter Joshua Omae to bring home the gold at this year’s Suva Zone 1 secondary schools athletics competition and the Coca-Cola Games in May.

Not much is known about the 18-year-old from Papua New Guinea but the question on everyone’s lips is — does Omae have what it takes to break Banuve Tabakaucoro’s 21.04s record for the 200m which was set in 2011?

The answer will be plain to see when the newcomer to LDS takes to the tracks at the HFC stadium on April 20 and April 21 at the Suva Zone 1 games.

Omae said his interest in athletics stemmed from his personal fitness goals and his keen interest in working with the rest of the team to achieve the best outcome for LDS.

“I’ve been training hard for almost a year, waking up every morning at 6am and doing my runs at a ground near my home before going to school,” the Year 13 student said.

“It’s been tough but I feel that I am improving and getting better with my times.”

The proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the tasting and athletics fans will get to see what the PNG youngster has to offer in four weeks’ time.
