Kelera Mudunasoko set a record by being the youngest athlete in the Fiji Swimming squad for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
The Year 10 student of Swami Vivekananda College in Nadi was on fire this weekend during the 2022 National Schools Swimming Championships at the Olympic Pool in Suva.
Originally from Lakeba, Lau, with maternal links to Nadroga, Mudunasoko said she was blessed to be in the squad for the Commonwealth Games this year.
“I’m nervous at the moment as I will be going up against international swimmers, some who have been in the competition for quite some time,” the 14-year-old said. She was happy with her performance.
“I want to thank my parents, my coach and members of the SVC swim team for their support and their help in helping me develop my swimming.”
Fiji Swimming president Ben Rova said Mudunasoko had a lot to offer to swimming in Fiji.
“Being the youngest is an advantage for her because it will be easy for us to mentor and mend her into being one of our best swimmers,” Rova said.
“She clocked two minutes and 51 seconds in the 200 metres breaststroke event at the championships. This was good to break the old record set by Moana Wind, also of SVC.
“Preparations for the Commonwealth Games have been good, so we will have a good go at the games this year.”
Mudunasoko joined students from around the country in the National Schools Swimming Championships this weekend.
