Forum to address debt crisis, national matters

Fiji’s debt crisis in the post-COVID-19 recovery era, impacts of cyclones on farmers and fishers’ livelihoods, gender equality, and a host of other issues will be discussed at the 2022 Pacific Update at the University of the South Pacific this week.

The keynote address will be delivered tomorrow morning by Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific Pat Conroy.

The media will come under the spotlight on Tuesday, June 28 when Kate Power from the University of Queensland will speak about ‘Reporting on violence against women and girls: A critical discourse analysis of Pacific-based newspaper reporting’.

Sunil Kumar from Pacific Polytech and Gyaneshwar Rao from the University of Fiji will discuss ‘Fiji’s debt crisis in the post-COVID-19 recovery era’ while Rukmani Gounder from Massey University will speak on ‘Tourism and economic growth linkages: Economic responses and recovery in Fiji’.

On Wednesday, Alexandra Dudley from the United Nations University and Reginald Singh from the UN Capital Development Fund will speak on ‘An investigation into differentiated disaster risk and discussion of potential implications for insurance solution: A case study in Fiji’.

There are many interesting topics that will be discussed throughout the week and the USP is calling on Fijians to take an interest in issues affecting the country and the region.
