Getting all its courses accredited by the end of this year is one of the major future plans of the Makoi Women’s Vocational Training Centre.

Speaking during the open day on Saturday, centre manager Shazna Khan said they were aiming to accredit all of their courses.

“Since we got registered with the Fiji Higher Education, we are a vocational institution now and we are aiming towards accrediting all our courses,” she said.

“So first, we started with caregiving. We had it accredited to a national certificate. We are slowly moving towards sewing. We want to offer a national certificate in fashion and design level 2.

“It will be a lengthy course as well, but it would hold a lot more value than the certificate we are providing now.

“After that, we will move into the cooking and pastry field where we will accredit that course as well.

“So all the courses that we want to provide should be accredited and the certificate should be recognised.”

Ms Khan said they had extended their course duration to 10 weeks from nine weeks.

“Nine weeks was their practical and theory at the centre and for the first time ever, we sent them out for one week for practical attachments.

“So after that 10-week period, they came back and whatever they had learned throughout, they are selling and showcasing it at the open day.”

Ms Khan said the open day was an opportunity for the 38 women to interact with their customers and put into practice their communication and advertising skills.

“This is part of their assessment as well before they graduate next week.”

She said the reduction in the grant provided by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation had affected the centre.
