Nai Lalakai trial: Judge needs more time

Update: 2:11PM HIGH Court judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe will deliver his judgement next Monday on an application for constitutional redress by a letter writer charged with sedition.

Josaia Waqabaca is charged along with The Fiji Times general manager and publisher, Hank Arts, the Fiji Times Ltd with sedition; while Nai Lalakai editor Anare Ravula, and The Fiji Times editor-in-chief Fred Wesley are charged with aiding and abetting the publication of the said letter that was alleged to have been seditious.

Justice Rajasinghe today informed Mr Waqabaca that the judgement was not ready and that he needed more time.

The charges originated from a letter written by Mr Waqabaca and published by the iTaukei language newspaper, Nai Lalakai, on April 27, 2016.

Mr Waqabaca’s lawyer Aman Ravindra-Singh in his motion for constitutional redress had challenged the legality of the charge laid against his client on the grounds that his client’s freedom of speech had been violated.
