A 109-year-old woman was among the 21,209 Fijians who received their new voter identification cards during the Fijian Elections Office nationwide voter registration drive, says Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem.
He revealed this during a news conference at the voter services centre in Nakasi yesterday.
“The green VoterCard has expired, you can no longer use it as an ID at any location,” Mr Saneem said.
“We now have received, over the last ten days, 21,209 voters, of which 4325 are new registrations, that is a very good rate of registration.”
He said one of the challenges faced by his officials was the huge number of people turning up to the voter services centre.
“Majority are doing change of address, some people moved in 2014 and now they are coming here to change their address.
“A lot of senior citizens have registered and one was a woman who was 109 years old, she registered and she has not voted in the last two elections, she has now been registered and, hopefully, she votes in the next elections.”
Meanwhile, Mr Saneem said last Thursday that the Nakasi Voter Services Center (VSC) recorded 1456 customers.
“By then, we had already prepared the VSC to receive a high density of customers and if you look at our Facebook page, the Nakasi VSC looked pretty empty.”
