Representatives from Fiji’s international partners and locally-based agencies, overseas-based missions, and other stakeholders attended their first briefing by the Fijian Elections Office (FEO), outlining the preparations and plans for the 2022 General Elections.

This is the first of a series of briefings, which since 2014 had been the practice of the FEO, to update various stakeholders on plans of the Electoral Commission and FEO in delivering the general election.

“We consider such briefings to be an essential component of election preparations; allowing all necessary stakeholders to be prepared for the election as well as to be aware of the various processes that we will execute before the election” Electoral Commission chairman Suresh Chandra.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem outlined the various plans and processes that would be required to be put in place before the country could be ready for the General Election next year.

“We are at a very critical juncture in terms of the road to 2022 and we have now managed to prepare a comprehensive plan and conceptualise that into one document with all the activities outlined so that staff of the FEO as well as the various other stakeholders can be aware of what to expect and when things in the election process will take place,” Mr Saneem said in a statement issued by the FEO yesterday.

He said they intended to run more of those seminars directly with political parties, civil society organisations, and also hold live sessions the FEO’s Facebook page to maximise on the circulation of election-related information.

The FEO will be conducting its live session for the general public on September 24 – from 11am, and anyone interested can link into the FEO Facebook page for the live feed.

More than 80 participants, including various heads of missions and other agencies, attended the first virtual meeting.
